James River Batteaux Festival

From the late 1700's to the early 1900's, batteaux plied the waters of the upper James and other rivers in Virginia.  Usually 40 to 60 feet long, batteaux carried crops, finished goods and occasionally, passengers.  In the days before highways and trains, batteaux were the cutting edge in transportation.  At their high point, as many as 500 batteaux plied the James between Richmond and Lynchburg.  This rich history is kept alive by the James River Batteaux Festival, whose members make the trip annually in June.
