Richmond, Virginia
Click image for larger view Eight days after landing at Jamestown, John Smith led a group of adventurers up the James River. On Whitsunday, 1607, Christopher Newport erected a cross, claiming the land that would become Richmond for God and England. Named after Richmond Upon Thames, the city was capital of the Confederacy and is today capital of the Commonwealth. Richmond is a modern urban center that combines a rich and storied past with a boundless energy taking it into the future. |
