The Battle of McDowell
May 8, 1862 The Battle of McDowell, the first Confederate victory of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, was fought in Highland County, VA on May 8, 1862. The battlefield is the only Valley Campaign site that looks almost precisely as it did at the time of the Civil War, and it has been designated "100% pristine" by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Every other year, McDowell turns the clock back to 1862 for its re-enactment of the Battle of McDowell. |

During the 1800's, brass bands were formed
of militia groups. They were highly valued by the militias
because they participated in musters, ceremonies and recruiting.
When the militias were called up for the Civil War, their bands went to
war with them. The Union Army was provided with 16-piece bands at
the brigade level. The Confederate Army had brass bands,
too. General Robert E. Lee said, "I don't believe we can have an
army without music".
